track & field events
Athletics (track & field) is one of the most popular Paralympic sports. Athletics was included in the competition program of the first Paralympic Games in 1960 in Rome. It involves the largest number of male and female athletes and the largest number of events. Participants in the Paralympic Games are athletes with varying disabilities including cerebral palsy, spinal cord injuries, amputations, visual impairments, intellectual impairments, short stature, and other physical disabilities. The competition program includes running events, throwing and jumping events, relay events, and the marathon. Athletes may compete in a wheelchair, using a prosthetic (artificial limb), or with the assistance of a guide.
